Something Fun!

We thought it would be interesting and fun to give a few mothers some questions to complete about their journey through pregnancy and birth.

Beware, some answers are quite honest! Hope you enjoy the read!

Pregnancy was fine, I craved strawberry milk, corn chips and hash browns.

Is there anything you were afraid of?

Don’t think so.

What would you say is important to pack in your hospital bag?

Comfy clothes and big knickers.

Is there something you wished you had packed that you didn’t?

Nope

How long were you in labour?

8 hrs.

40 mins.

Did you have any pain relief during labour? If so, what?

Epidural for first.

Nothing for second.

Long and boring with epidural.

Not that bad without.

What is one thing about birth that you didn’t know about or wish you were told?

Not sure.

How did it feel holding your baby for the first time?

First one I was thinking “I hope her nose doesn’t stay that flat!”

For the second I was in too much pain getting stitched up so gave him to my partner.

Do you have anything to share that would help other expectant mums and their partners stay in hospital easier or nicer?

Not really.

What did it feel like to take bub home for the first time? Were you anxious, excited, etc?

Excited glad to leave hospital both times.

Now that you are a mum are there any tips or advice that you would like to share to any expectant parents about pregnancy and/or parenthood?

Second Mother

Did you have a boy or a girl?

Girl

How old is your baby girl now?

5 weeks

Can you please explain your journey to falling pregnant?

We tried naturally for 3 years, I was 29 then decided to try IVF and it took 2 years before it finally worked, so I was 34 by then. Our daughter was the 5th embryo, $10,000 plus later! I wish I took the biological clock more seriously and didn’t wait for the right time.

How was your pregnancy? Did you have cravings, etc?

I had no complications during my pregnancy but I didn’t enjoy being pregnant, very uncomfortable all the time. My partners too scared to answer but I know I was cranky a lot.

What would you say is important to pack in your hospital bag?

Fruit and Muesli Bars, I was always hungry at night.

Warm loose pjs and socks for night time, it gets cold.

Extra long phone charger to reach hospital bed.

Is there something you wished you had packed that you didn’t?

Extra long phone charger!

How long were you in labour?

4 hours.

Did you have any pain relief during labour? If so, what?

I wanted an epidural and they kept saying I had heaps of time being my first baby. It progressed so quick so we had no time.

How would you describe labour?

Horrendous!! Every pregnant woman before you lies!! Next time I’m making sure I get that epidural!!

What is one thing about birth that you didn’t know about or wish you were told?

That I would be on all fours naked hugging the bed legs with five people looking up me!

How did it feel holding your baby girl for the first time?

It was amazing but I was definitely still in shock from what I had just been through.

Do you have anything to share that would help other expectant mums and their partners stay in hospital easier or nicer?

Not really.

What did it feel like to take bub home for the first time? Were you anxious, excited, etc?

We were prepared and excited.

Now that you are a mum are there any tips or advice that you would like to share to any expectant parents about pregnancy and/or parenthood?

My partner said “look calm at all times”.

Are there any other comments you would like to share?

No

Third Mother

Did you have a boy or a girl?

1 Boy

2 & 3 Girls

How old is your baby girl now?

Boy – 14

Girls – 10 & 12

Can you please explain your journey to falling pregnant?

First pregnancy – Started trying just before wedding, came off the pill thinking I needed to get my body adjusted in order to fall pregnant, little did I know I was pregnant on my wedding day, flying back from my Honeymoon wondering why I felt so shit!

How was your pregnancy? Did you have cravings, etc?

I love food, so I had lots of “cravings” 😉 I’m pretty sure if anyone mentioned food or if I saw a particular food, I would not stop thinking about it until I had it myself!! All 3 of my pregnancy’s were uneventful and “normal”.

Is there anything you were afraid of?

By number 3 I had a bit of a fear of labour….first birth I don’t remember being too traumatic, 2nd birth came quickly and I don’t think I had enough time to get in the zone with the happy gas, so by the time I was pregnant with my 3rd I was terrified, even hired a tens machine. But still, all 3 were a natural birth.

What would you say is important to pack in your hospital bag?

Hmm, decent maternity pads! The ones the hospital supplied were horrendous.

Is there something you wished you had packed that you didn’t?

Wasn’t really in hospital too long to have missed anything from packing.

How long were you in labour?

Under 10 hours I think for all 3.

Did you have any pain relief during labour? If so, what?

Just the happy gas for all 3 and the labour tens machine for number 3.

How would you describe labour?

Serious stomach pain and then doing a big poo out your vagina, or literally doing a big poo……😉

What is one thing about birth that you didn’t know about or wish you were told?

I didn’t expect having to push the placenta out the first time. Also had no idea about first breastfeeding and it causing my stomach to contract and feel like I was in labour again.

How did it feel holding your baby for the first time?

Surreal, didn’t really sink in until home weeks later.

A bit gross too, trying to kiss and be ok about him being covered in birth muck 😉

Do you have anything to share that would help other expectant mums and their partners stay in hospital easier or nicer?

Stay as long as you can, as keen as you are to get home and get stuck into being parents, make the most of the hospital, the staff and their expertise. Listen to all the advice and then do what you feel is right for you.

What did it feel like to take bub home for the first time? Were you anxious, excited, etc?

Super excited, couldn’t wait to get home and be a mum and do all the mum things.

Now that you are a mum are there any tips or advise that you would like to share to any expectant parents about pregnancy and/or parenthood?

Don’t waste your money on all the latest gadgets, keep it simple and enjoy the basics – your baby will get as much joy from the being outside, playing with an empty box. You will get tired and it is bloody hard MOST days, BUT, it will get better, before you know it your youngest is 10!
